About the Artist

Jo Ipong: The Soul of the Unrefined

Honoring the human hand in a digital world.

My work is a tactile protest against the increasing polish of the digital age. I spend my days in a studio defined by the scent of linseed oil and a constant clutter of half-finished sketches, rooted in the belief that my most powerful tool as an artist is my own inherent fallibility.

I’ve developed a signature style centered on a heavy, aggressive impasto technique. I don’t just paint my subjects; I try to sculpt them onto the canvas. By isolating weathered objects—from a single bruised pear to a discarded leather boot—I aim to elevate the mundane and find a soulful narrative in the evidence of wear and utility. To me, a stray bristle mark or a muddy color transition isn't an error to be corrected; it’s a vital timestamp of a human moment.

I work exclusively on deep, gallery-wrapped canvases because I treat the physical structure of the substrate as an extension of the work itself. I want the viewer to engage with the art as a living, breathing object, feeling the weight and depth of the material. Through Wrapped in Imperfection, Echoes of Time, and my broader practice, I continue to explore the quiet beauty found in the unrefined, the aged, and the unapologetically manmade.
